PRODUCTION BASE

Jilin OGO

Jilin OGO Biotechnology Co., Ltd. was established on January 2, 2020. The company has built a production capacity of 100,000 tons of trehalose and compound sugars.

Since 2023, sustained increases in white sugar prices have pushed the white sugar market price well above that of trehalose, resulting in persistent supply shortages for the company’s trehalose. The company has completed a technological upgrade and expansion project, increasing annual production capacity to 100,000 metric tons.

The company has now become the world’s largest producer of trehalose, with a market share of approximately 40%. Over the next three years, the company aims to expand its trehalose production capacity to 300,000 metric tons per year or more.

Trehalose Product Introduction

Trehalose is a non-reducing disaccharide composed of two glucose molecules linked by a 1,1-glycosidic bond, and it exerts nonspecific protective effects on a wide range of bioactive substances. Scientists have discovered that the desert plant Selaginella lepidophylla nearly withers to death during drought but can miraculously revive upon rehydration; the alpine plant resurrection plant can withstand extreme cold and icy conditions; and certain insects remain unfrozen and do not desiccate even under severe cold, high temperature, and dehydration—all thanks to the life-saving properties conferred by trehalose within their bodies. For these reasons, trehalose has long been hailed in the scientific community as the “sugar of life.” In July 2000, the internationally renowned journal Nature published a special article evaluating trehalose, which stated: “For many organisms, the presence or absence of trehalose can mean the difference between life and death.”

Since its inception, the company has leveraged the Jiangnan University Food Biotechnology R&D team’s expertise in biofermentation, starting with the development of amylase preparations. Building on this foundation, in 2012 the company began biosynthesizing a range of trehalose products through biofermentation, and achieved mass production in 2015. Today, our company has become the largest trehalose manufacturer in China.

Trehalose products are currently in the phase of market development, consumer habit formation, and application expansion across multiple industries in China. Over the past few years, our company has achieved nearly 100% annual growth from a zero-base, and trehalose is now widely used by numerous well-known manufacturers in sectors such as confectionery, fillings, candied fruits, chocolate, ice cream, canned goods, and baked goods.

It is foreseeable that the application of trehalose will replace a portion of white sugar in certain segments of the food industry. We project that over the next five years, China’s domestic trehalose consumption market will exceed 1 million tonnes. (Currently, the annual consumption market for white sugar stands at approximately 15 million tonnes, while the annual consumption market for starch sugars exceeds 10 million tonnes.)

Company’s Advantages in the Trehalose Production Industry

A. The company has now become the world’s largest manufacturer in terms of production scale and holds a leading position in market development and cultivation as well as in the accumulation of production technology.

B. Currently, the company is among the leading enterprises in enzyme preparation technology and biofermentation-based trehalose synthesis technology.

C. The company has now entered the stage of large-scale production; in particular, following the collaboration with Cargill, the production cost of trehalose has dropped significantly, substantially enhancing the product’s cost competitiveness.
